Causes of a refrigerator not cooling, explained by Arrington TN technicians

The Short Answer

A warm fridge is almost never a mystery once you check things in the right order. Airflow problems cause most warm-fridge calls, followed by defrost failures, then control faults, with sealed-system and compressor problems last and least common. Work the list in order and you will usually find your cause in the first four.

First, the checks that cost nothing

Confirm the temperature settings (37 to 40 degrees for the fresh-food side, zero for the freezer) and give any change a full day; refrigerators adjust slowly. Check that food packages are not blocking the vents between the freezer and fridge sections, and that the doors close and seal: a dollar bill should drag when pulled from a closed gasket.

Look at the condenser coils, usually behind a front grille or rear panel. In Arrington’s pollen and pet country, coils mat over with dust until the fridge cannot shed heat, and the symptom is a unit that runs constantly and cools weakly. A coil brush and vacuum fix more warm fridges than any part we sell.

The middle of the list: fans, frost, and dampers

If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, suspect airflow: the evaporator fan may have failed, the damper between sections may be stuck, or frost may be sealing the vents shut. Frost on the freezer’s back wall is the visible clue for a defrost system failure: heater, thermostat, or control board. Each is a routine, mid-range repair.

A fridge that clicks repeatedly and never quite starts often has a failing start relay, a small inexpensive part that mimics a dead compressor. Swapping the relay is a five-minute test that has saved many Arrington households from a compressor quote they did not need.

The end of the list: controls and sealed systems

Control boards and thermistors fail less often but present confusingly: temperatures that swing, sections that freeze food while the other warms, displays that disagree with a thermometer. We verify with independent temperature readings before condemning a board.

Compressor and refrigerant problems are real but rarer than their reputation. True signs include both sections warm, a compressor silent or scorching hot, and oily residue at line joints. Those jobs are expensive, and on an older fridge they trigger the repair-or-replace conversation we outline in our repair or replace framework.

When to stop troubleshooting

If both sections are warming in summer heat, food safety outranks diagnosis: keep the doors shut and call. Our refrigerator repair team treats warm-fridge calls as urgent in July and August for exactly that reason. Energy guidance on refrigerator efficiency and settings is also published by the U.S. Department of Energy for readers who want the background.

A Word on Temperature Guns and Guesswork

Homeowners often ask whether a cheap infrared thermometer helps. It does, with one caution: it reads surface temperatures, so point it at a jar or a wall inside the fridge, not at the air, and compare sections rather than chasing decimals. A five-degree difference between your thermometer and the display is a conversation starter; a fifteen-degree difference is a service call.

And a closing honesty note: internet forums love the compressor answer because it is dramatic. In our Arrington call history it is the minority outcome. Work the cheap end of the list first, in order, and let evidence promote the expensive suspects.

Questions & Answers

Perishables held above 40 degrees for more than about two hours should be treated cautiously, and anything questionable should go. When in doubt, throw it out; no grocery bag is worth a hospital visit.

Airflow again: cold air is not circulating. A failed fan, blocked vents, or an overpacked fridge are the usual causes, all in the cheap half of the list.

Not usually, but it is a symptom with a deadline: constant running overheats compressors over time and inflates your power bill. Book a diagnosis within days, not months.

A colder setting cannot fix a failed fan or frosted vents, and it can freeze food in the fresh-food section while the real problem worsens. Settings are step one of the checklist, not the solution.
